Bajoran civilization spans more than half a million years. Ancient Bajorans were famous for their accomplishments in science, mathematics, philosophy, and the arts. The greatest of these early Bajoran civilizations was the First Republic, which flourished between 25,000 and 20,000 years ago. During this time, the Bajorans constructed magnificent cities such as B'hala.
The next great phase of Bajoran civilization began approximately 10,000 years ago when the first Tears of the Prophets appeared. These artifacts inaugurated a new era of spiritual connection with the Bajoran Prophets. By the 16th Century (in the Terran calendar) the Bajorans had developed sub-light space travel and were exploring space in their solar-system with spacecraft that used solar-sails. The Bajoran explorers even reached the Cardassian system several light-years away. In the 24th Century, this period came to an end with the annexation of Bajor by the Cardassians.
Bajorans usually refer to the Occupation of Bajor simply as the Occupation. It was the period from 2328 to 2369 during which the Cardassian Union controlled the the Bajoran homeworld of Bajor. During the Occupation, the Cardassians perpetrated a scheme of strip-mining, forced labor, and genocide across the planet. The Occupation gave rise to the fierce Bajoran Resistance that used guerilla and terrorist tactics to force the Cardassians to withdraw.
After the Cardassians withdrew from Bajor, a Bajoran Provisional Government formed to administer the planet and its various colonies. Bajoran politics is balanced between the secular Chamber of Ministers, under leadership of the First Minister, and the religious Vedek Assembly, under the leadership of the kai. It is possible for one individual to be both the kai and the first minister simultaneously as Winn Adami almost was in 2371, however, one person usually does not have sufficient skill or political power to unite both aspects of government in that manner.
The provinces, and the communities within them, govern themselves by councils that often mimic the national structure. The Bajoran people elect their leaders in a republican style of government, where the leaders represent the people but have sufficient autonomy to make decisions that they believe are appropriate without being completely subject to the whim of their constituents.
