Zakar Jin

Astor Jin had become the head of a successful interplanetary shipping company, and Shayla Elbrun had earned a planet-wide reputation as a pathologist on Bynaus when they married in 2376. When she became pregnant, she sensed that something was unusual about her pregnancy. Her physician confirmed that she was carrying twins, and that she actually sensed two bonds rather than one.
The twins, Sharia and Zakar, were born on February 2, 2381 by Terran reckoning. Astor hoped that young Zakar would follow his example and eventually lead the shipping company. Shayla dreamed of Sharia surpassing her accomplishments in pathology. Zakar began to exhibit above-normal telepathic and empathic ability and sensitivity from an early age. He is so sensitive to strong thoughts and emotions that, in some cases, he has suffered temporary paralyze, extreme withdrawal from his surroundings, and coma. During his childhood, he shared an extremely close bond with his sister. They continue to be close to each other and protective of each other as adults.
In 2398, Zakar's parents moved with his sister from Bynaus, where the family lived throughout his life, to Terra. He remained on Bynaus to attend Bynaus Institute of Technology while Sharia attended Johns Hopkins University. Although Zakar excelled in most subjects, he struggled with courses that were necessary for a degree in business. He often neglected his studies in those topics so that he could talk to other students as an amateur counselor. Sociology, history, music, and languages also appealed to him. When his parents learned that he was not showing promise as a businessman, they were furious to the point of disowning him. His sister supported his decision and likewise announced that she intended to work in something beside pathology. She challenged them by saying that if they disowned him, they should disown her. Although the parents grudgingly reconciled with the children to some extent, they have continued to be bitter toward their children for their disappointment. In 2399, Zakar transferred to New Risa where he would earn a degree in psychology. He also met a girl who captured his heart so completely that he named her as his Imzadi. When she began to suffer from severe depression, he struggled tirelessly and with complete devotion to help her to overcome the condition. She seemed to be stable when they went on separate vacations in the summer of 2400. However, she suffered a severe relapse in his absence. She returned to New Risa and became suicidal. She called him and asked him to return to help her. He immediately abandoned the vacation and headed for New Risa but the depression had reached its peak. She killed herself. He arrived at her apartment to find the local police in the first stages of their investigation and medical personnel preparing to take her body from the scene. In his grief, he decided that he would not pursue a career in counseling even though he showed great promise in the field. He graduated from the university in 2402.
His parents announced after his graduation that they would go on separate ventures. Father would scout remote parts of the galaxy for new shipping markets. Mother would continue research in trans-species diseases. Although the parents were carefully guarding their emotions and thoughts, Zakar discovered that they really were preparing to divorce. The news stunned him. He and his sister decided to travel to Terra to see what the future might hold for them. At that point, their story on ATS began.
Zakar has some experience in piloting Freighters (Classes I - V) but is, by nature, not a combative person. He typically plays the role of a peacemaker or, occasionally, an informal counselor to people who need or want someone to listen to their problems. He enjoys learning about the history and culture of other species. He is familiar with the music, literature, and cuisine of a number of different cultures. He is a pacifist who struggles with the violence that he increasingly sees in the galaxy.
