Sivaoans

Sivaoans are a felinoid race from the TOS Star Trek novel Uhura's Song by Janet Kagen. It is highly suggested that anyone wishing to play a member of this race or it's offshoot, an Eeiauoan, obtain a copy and read it.

The racial home is Sivao, a wilderness planet in the Federation. Though a technologically advanced society, Sivaoans prefer a nomadic hunter gatherer lifestyle. You will find that cities and the like are not present, although there are a few semi-permanent encampments that have been established where they do business with off worlders. Most permanent structures are designed to blend in with the surround wilderness and may not be noticed as such by those unfamiliar with the planet. Most Sivaoans live in tents in small groups. The adolescents do not sleep in the tents with the adults and children, but in what is called a "swagger-lair" which is basically a sort of covered hammock slung between 2 trees about 30 feet up. The swagger lairs, as well as tents and many other things, are made from "Usefuls" heavy, blanket-sized pieces of fabric.

Described as 'Giant Housecats' by Dr. McCoy in the novel, they do indeed appear as very large bipedal cats similar to those domesticated on Terra and are equally at home in a quadrupedal mode.

Emotional Displays

A few clues to the emotional state of a Sivaoan as these tend to be expressed with the ears, whiskers and tail:

  • A Looped tail generally indicates that the Sivaoan is smiling or is happy.
  • A tail looped into a helix is the Sivaoan form of laughter.
  • A twitching tail and/or a twitching of the ears and whiskers, or a combination of the three generally means irritation or annoyance though sometimes it can also be mild excitement.
  • A tail lashing back and forth shows anger.
  • Ears laid back, fur bristled, hissing and tail lashing means they are really angry.
  • Ears laid back can also indicate surprise.
  • One ear back shows Disdain
  • Quivering of the ears, whiskers, tail, body show excitement. Quivering ears can also mean concentration.
  • Whiskers spread forward can mean interest.
  • Whiskers spread wide can show attention or amusement.
  • Sivaoan rebukes tend to be delivered via a strong cuff to the head (they possess thick skulls)
  • A typical Sivaoan greeting is to raise the forepaws and slowly extend and then retract the claws. This display is designed to tell the person being greeted that though they have the ability to attack, the greeter has chosen to be peaceful. They have a saying which goes along with this practice "Head is harder than hand."
