New Risa is a tropical haven planet, mostly submerged in water. There are two continents, an island paradise archipelago called Coridan that was terraformed to resemble the Terran islands of Hawaii, and the mainland called Amphion. The varied chains of islands, including those of Coridan, were owned by the United Federation of Planets. The Free Trader's Galactic Trade Conglomerate, under a 2401 agreement, owned the largest continent of Amphion which covers almost half the planet. The FTGTC had developed several cities on Amphion, such as Port Fortune, known well for it's diverse tourist attractions and stretching residential districts for FTGTC employees, as well as Coveted Cove, the trade center of New Risa where the FTGTC held many commerical and industrial facilities.
The Unity took over the planet of New Risa from the United Federation of Planets a few months after President Jonathan Salizar left office. During the Salizar Administration the Federation Government explored options with The Unity to place a stargate within Federation space to increase trade. It was not until the administration of President Luke Zitto that the planet was turned over to The Unity for a price. As a result of the move the FTGTC was removed from the planet.
