Joshua Hayes

Joshua's Background
Joshua Brewster Hayes was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, the son of a Starfleet admiral and captain, in the year 2369. His descent is mostly Italian and German, with 1/8th Maori. His father and mother always wished him to also be in Starfleet, and so he attended, and eventually graduated from the Academy. He got his first posting aboard a scientfic research station, and quickly made his way to Lieutenant (JG). He demonstrated good work ethic, bring promoted once, and then again with a transfer to the USS Lovell science vessel, as Lieutenant Commander and XO of ship in 2392. However, he then that year went AWOL, citing loyalties to support the Bajorans in their fight against the Cardassians. He jumped from one merc group to another, eventually finding himself on Rigel.
Word began slowly trickling out of Rigel and Gamora that a change to a more legitimate govenment may be occurring, under a local freedom fighter named Dr. Pouncer T'mrran; he was finally able to join up with T'mrran in 2395.
With T'mrran, he acted as a freighter pilot and blockade runner, shipping supplies and equipment to disadvantaged ex-slaves and refugees who needed protection from the various Orion warlords. While all of the trades he made he considered to be missions of mercy, and while the T'mrran's insurrection was benevolent, the fact that he has a past with the Orions could be considered a spot on his career and conscience - indeed, there had been many times that he was often left with a question of 'Am I doing the right thing?' During this time, he fell in love with an Orion slave girl; foolishly, he thought that the feelings were reciprocated. In his attempt to purchase her from the Orion warlord who owned her, he was put under chains and tortured under the warlord's command. He was still young and naive, thinking that he was the slave girl's 'knight in shining armor'; instead, she smiled and laughed with the warlord as he removed Joshua's left eye under torture. Rather than getting an implant, Joshua wore an eyepatch from then on in to remind him that, it is always important to do good at all times, to always at least give the attempt to help others, and protect the innocent and underprivilged - regardless of the pain or suffering that is meted out. In essence, even though this was a painful lesson to him, it strengthened his conviction to always seek and strive for good in all things.

Finally, T'mrran was able to declare a victory against the warlords, and was elected to be first president of the benevolent League of Orion Planets in 2396. Joshua continued on as a freighter pilot, continuing the captaincy of the SS Hunley, (Antares-class armed freighter) the ship he used while blockade running for T'mrran. He also started Vanguard Industries, a shipping and raw material processing company, with offices in the GFA and UFP - he considered this a further step to opening up the Orion worlds to the outside, to help T'mrran gain legitimacy.
During this time, Joshua acting in the background in various events, such as the rise of Tatzin-Kao, meeting several people briefly, but not enough such that he would be remembered in any way - During this time, Joshua believed that being in the background, supporting others who believed as he did, was the best way of advancing the goal of once more bringing stability to the Orions.
At one point, Joshua acted in part with a group (possibly Silver Fleet?) in an action against the Borg. It was during this engagement that the SS Hunley was disabled, life support taking the brunt of the damage. The Hunley was last seen adrift in space during the engagement, but afterwards, had drifted off to parts unknown.
Player's Note
Joshua Hayes was named after a background character in Clive Cussler's book 'Raise the Titanic,' whose name was 'Joshua Hayes Brewster.'
