A human woman. Her hair is black, slightly wavy, and very shiny. She has bright clear blue eyes ringed with dark lashes, a small straight nose, and rounded ears. Her mouth is full and pouty giving her face a soft youthful look. She stands about 5'6" and has a slender athletic build. Her toned body seems a contradiction to her soft face. Overall, she appears to be about twenty-seven standard years old. Her hair falls down her back in soft curly tendrils. She wears a gauzy white toga dress that flows from her shoulders down to her sandaled feet. A silver ribbon holds the cloth to her torso by encircling her just below her breasts and then coming forward again to crisscross her chest in antique style. The guazy fabric seems to have tiny silver flecks in it that catch the light as she moves. Silver sandals protect her small feet with straps crisscrossing up her ankles. Interwoven bands of silver enclose seven tiny black gems in a symbol of eternity which wraps around her right hand ring finger. She wears a thin silver wristband chronograph on her left wrist. A jeweled forcefield belt is worn low on her hips.
Magna Roma is populated by humans taken from the Roman Empire on Earth and placed there by the Preservers. When Captain Kirk arrived at Magna Roma on Stardate 4040.7, he found a society that mixed ancient practices with 20th century technology. It was a cruel period of Magna Roman history marked by religious persecution and violence. Contact with the Federation brought Magna Roma into a golden era of understanding and peace. The majority of the inhabitants worship the ancient Olympian gods. Other aspects of the ancient culture are apparent in the architecture and dress utilized by most of the population. Until a few years ago Magna Roma served as the main diplomatic planet of the Federation. UFPDS is now located on Earth.
Hypatia Lea was born on Magna Roma. Her father, Marcellus, and her mother Julia, have only the one child but the extended family is very large. Pandora and Marius Lea are Hypatia's first cousins. The extended family together owns the Lea Shipping Corporation. Most family members join the family business. Hypatia first went into space on one of the family's freighters at the age of three. Her early education included basic shipboard systems and she particularly enjoyed piloting these vessels. Pandora Lea was the first member of the family to leave Magna Roma and pursue a different career. Her brother Marius was inspired to do the same and has even left the Federation. They have inspired other younger family members to do the same.
She obtained her high school diploma at the age of 16 and then entered a period of service to the temple of Hermes. Hermes is the messenger of the gods. He is the god of travel, merchants, oratory, literature, athletics, and thieves. He is known for his cunning and shrewdness. At the temple of Hermes, young acolytes are taught and encouraged in all of these things. Religion is an important part of Hypatia's life. She has taken an oath to obey the gods and live by their laws. There were many restrictions put on her while she was an acolyte of the temple but they have lessened now that she has left its service. She wears the ring of Hermes to constantly remind her of her oath. In return for service and devotion to the gods, they owe her their protection and aid which often takes the form of luck. While in service at the temple, Hypatia showed promise in training as a diplomat and afterwards studied diplomacy and cultures to the Masters level.
Hypatia Lea left Magna Roma and joined the Federation Diplomatic Service at the beginning of President T'Sha's administration. Michael Blondel as the Secretary of State. Hypatia's cousin Pandora had almost married Michael Blondel before she died about a year before Hypatia joined FDS. After a training period with Secretary Blondel, Hypatia held negotiations with the Cardassians and then was assigned to the Romulans as part of a cultural exchange mission.
