The Government of the United Federation of Planets is composed of two branches, one executive and one legislative.

The Executive Branch
President: The chief elected representative of the citizens of all Federation member worlds at home and abroad. Those who are made President are done so through Federation-wide voting. Presidents will serve a term of four months. General elections will be held at the end of March, July, and November. The President is considered the Chief Ambassador, Commander-in-Chief of Starfleet and Head of the Cabinet.
Vice President: The fallback elected representative of the citizens of all Federation member worlds. Vice Presidents and Presidents are elected together on the same political ticket. The Vice President does not have any daily responsibilities or duties other than helping to advise the President as requested. He or she may take over the duties of the President as requested or as needed.

Presidential Cabinet
The President of the United Federation of Planets may appoint, at his or her discretion, an advisory Cabinet to head up the Federation's departments and report back with information and advice on their subject areas.
The current Cabinet positions are:

The Legislative Branch (NPC)
The Federation Council is the legislative branch of the government. It is composed of members elected by the Federation populace on a rotating basis. The Council currently consists of representation from all member worlds.
It has the right to call testimony on any subject it sees fit and can legislate accordingly. A majority vote is necessary to decide any issue presented before it.
Between the First Federation Governing Reform Act and the Second Federation Governing Reform Act, the current Presidential system of the Federation government was replaced with a Parliamentary system of government, in which all power (executive and legislative) was focused in a five member Federation Council elected by the populace at large in rotating terms. The Council then elected a Chief Councilor who served in much the same capacity as the Federation President before him. With the passage of the 2nd FGRA, the Presidential system was reinstated and the Council was returned to its purely legislative role.
