Not much is know about his past, and even what is known is not to be taken for granted. From his uncanny sense of trade it can be assumed that he comes from a family of merchants. Contrary to the rumor, he does not have Ferengi blood.
What he has, though, is Betazoid blood. Not many know about it, and Dalmont is not publicizing that fact: after all, ages ago, bastards were sub-citizens in France and that stigma is still socially resented in the French society. Besides, there is no point telling everyone about him being half-Betazoid: Dalmont cannot read minds - some mean people could say that he cannot even read his own. All he can do is sense or feel strong emotions from people close to him.
That really solves the problem, because the Frenchman does not have many close friends. Actually, if asked about it, he would simply admit to having no friend at all. He is not bothered by that. The French trader lives on contacts and "connaissances" (acquaintances). That seems to suffice for him.
For months, Dalmont has been engaged to the Bajoran Docteur Alaren Thalasa. This relationship ended recently, but the Frenchman keeps considering himself as the father of Alaren's baby girl Edan. Dalmont discovered that he loves kids, especially that little one who can do whatever she wants with him.
Although Dalmont prides himself for being smart (actually, he prides himself with everything), he is usually easy to read. Understanding him, though, is another cup of tea and many will give up instead of trying to understand his way of thinking and most of all, his motivations. Basically, he is French and businessman. So whatever is about pride, flatterie, trade and profit will have him going.
His most famous quote says it all:
"I do three things perfectly well: Trade, babies, and messing up."
