Entrance Foyer [Ground Zero]
This room is a large regular cylindar, 50 meters in diameter and 20 meters
in height. The walls, ceiling, and floor, consist of equilateral triangular
plates of flat black, separated by thin glowing yellow borders.

The slightly trapezoidal viewscreen wraps smoothly in an arc along the
surface of the forward bulkhead wall. The wide view is outlined in yellow
tracers. The broad, flat-surfaced consoles here are elegantly curved into
arcs, wrapped around attendant build-in seats. The outer casings are a dark
gunmetal blue, with crimson tracers around their edges, and multicolored
user interfaces on their surfaces.

unique number to each of the contacts, for example Titan Echo is called contact
2."
You say, "Type indicates a broad category of the contact. We see the major
three here: Ship, Base, and Planet."
You say, "Res (resolution) indicates how well we can see the target. All three
of them are right on top of us, so we have full 100 resolution on them. Your
resolution on a target depends on a few things: your range to the target, the
size of the target, any electronic warfare or cloaking devices being used by
you or the target, and the motion of the target. These mostly have an obvious
effect, for instance larger targets are easier to see, slower moving targets
are harder to see etc."
You say, "Normally, res on a target will start at 1, at which point you'll only
be able to see the category of the target. When Res goes over 30, you'll be
able to get the ship class. And once it goes over 50, you'll get the ship's

easy to imagine: if you lay a pen on a desk, you can think of the tip of the pen
as your yaw. Increasing your yaw is like turning the pen in a circle
clockwise on the desk."
You say, "Using the same analogy, increasing pitch would be lifting the tip of
the pen off the desk. Decreasing it would be pointing it down into the desk."
You say, "You also have control over roll, which would be like twisting the pen
around its length. This can be very useful in combat but I'm not going to go

You say, "Okay, now to look a bit more at the sensor report. You'll notice the

course is '45 0'."
You say, "Now some people right now might be saying 'Hey if they're directly
behind us, why aren't they at bearing 180 0?'. Well, that's because the bearings
(and headings) are all given relative to a galactic-fixed frame. This may take
some time to understand, but it's an important point."
You say, "Okay, now comes the next column: Range. You can see our range is shown
as 2350.64 to all the targets, more specifically 2350.64 SU. There's also another
unit used, called 'parsecs'. These are much larger than SUs, and are shown in
the sensor report as numbers in square brackets like [0.100]."

which give more information about the contacts. Let's go through the Titan's
flags."

finally S means its shields are active."

impulse is very important for a few reasons. First, when you're moving in to
dock at a planet or station, you'll need to go to impulse to do fine
manoeuvering to get into place. But there's also another important point. Your
weapon ranges are VERY different depending on whether you or the person you're
shooting at are at warp."
You say, "When you or your target are at impulse, your weapon ranges are
normally in the range of 3000-5000 SU (depending on the weapon). When you AND
your target are at warp, your weapon ranges are in the range of [0.300]-[0.500]
PC. So what? Well, that means if you're at warp [0.300] PC from someone also at
warp, you can drop to impulse to avoid being shot. And if you're the attacker;
if someone drops to impulse it means you'll have to go in after them at impulse,

You say, "The next thing I'm going to show is the autopilot, which is used
to automatically control your speed to get into impulse range on things."
You say, "When navigating between planets in space, you will typically use
'layin'. That lets you lay in a course to a planet without knowing its
coordinates. After laying in, you need to 'engage' to point the ship in
the correct direction. For example, to lay in course to Earth, you would do
'layin earth', then 'engage'. For now, though, we will use different commands
since our destination in view."
You say, "We're going to go back to dock at the starbase to end off the lesson.
So, first thing we want to do is intercept the starbase with 'inter 3'"
[Guide]--[Intercept course to The Starbase (3) set 225.000 0.000]
You say, "This will turn us to face the starbase."
[Yaw now 225.000 degrees]
You say, "Next I'm going to turn on the autopilot, using 'autopilot on'"
[Guide]--[Autopilot engaged]
[Yaw now 224.955 degrees]
You say, "And finally go back to cruise warp with 'warp crui'"
