Bajoran Politics

Advocate - Bajoran legal representative, equivalent to a Terran lawyer. [Necessary Evil]

Agriculture Ministry - Bajoran government body responsible for the restoration of farming lands on Bajor. Developed machines called Reclaimators to detoxify the large amount of land polluted by the Cardassians during the Occupation. [Shakaar]

Alliance for Global Unity - Bajoran extremist organisation more commonly known as "The Circle". Based on a belief in "Bajor for Bajorans" and that all other species are inferior and should be removed from the planet [The Homecoming] Led by Minister Jaro Essa, they were almost successful in taking control of Bajor. The headquarters were located in the labyrinths under the Perikian peninsula. The group captured and tortured Major Kira Nerys. [The Circle] Finally defeated after it was revealed that they were being supplied weapons by the Cardassians. [The Siege]

Arbitrator - Bajoran legal official, equivalent to a Terran judge. [Dax]

Archon - Cardassian legal official, equivalent to a Terran judge. There is also the higher position of Chief Archon. [Tribunal]

Bajoran Provisional Government - Ruling body set up following the withdrawal of the Cardassian Occupational forces. The splinter groups that formed the new government were brought into check by Kai Opaka following the discovery of the Celestial Temple by the Emissary. [Emissary] It is headed by the Chamber of Ministers, containing the most senior officials. Almost overthrown by the former Minister Jaro Essa in a coup supported by the Circle organisation. [The Circle] The ruling head of the government is the First Minister, who is elected by the public for a 6 year term. Currently this is the former Resistance leader Shakaar Edon. [Shakaar]

Bank of Bolius - One of the premier financial institutions and thought to be the safest. [Who Mourns for Morn?] [Honor Among Thieves]

Board of Ministers - Committee of Bajoran government ministers that oversee general business, such as the work of the Institute of Science. [The Alternate]

Cardassian Institute of Art - Bureaucratic organisation to officially sanction and promote Cardassian art. Accepted three pieces of artwork by Tora Ziyal for display in an exhibition.

Cardassian Intelligence Bureau - Organisation that replaced the Obsidian Order following the destruction of the Cardassian-Romulan fleet in the Gamma Quadrant and the assassination of many of its operatives by Enabran Tain. [Rocks and Shoals]

Circle - Extremist organisation. See Alliance for Global Unity. [The Homecoming]

Civilian Assembly - Another name for the Detapa Council, the Cardassian political body consisting of a council of Legates. Responsible for the Withdrawal from Bajor. They have no direct authority over the Military. [Cardassians]

Department of Temporal Investigations - Federation investigative and enforcement body that monitors any incidences of time travel or other temporal events. Regulation 157 Section 3 Paragraph 13 of the Starfleet code of conduct states that "Starfleet officers shall take all necessary precautions to minimise any participation in historical events."

Detapa Council - Cardassian civilian government that assumed power in early 2372 after the military rule of the Central Command was overthrown by the populace. This action gave a suspicion that the Founders had infiltrated the Cardassian Empire, leading to an attempted invasion by a Klingon task force. The Council was successfully evacuated to Bajoran space and the invasion stopped with Federation intervention. [Way of the Warrior]

Dominion - Gamma Quadrant political organisation. Ruled by force of arms by the Founders, a race of changelings. Through the use of the powerful Jem'Hadar, the Dominion controls a vast area of populated space and has influence over trade throughout most of the Gamma Quadrant. [The Jem'Hadar]

Executive Committee - Bajoran Military body. Starfleet officer Benjamin Sisko invited to address the Generals of this group in late 2369. [The Circle]

Federation Council - Ruling body of the United Federation of Planets. Made up of delegates from all member planets and each branch of Starfleet.

Federation News Service - One of the top journalism organisations in the Alpha Quadrant. Employed Jake Sisko to report on the Dominion war from the occupied Deep Space Nine. No reports arrived prior to it being retaken by the Federation due to Dominion censorship. [Time to Stand]

Ferengi Benevolent Association - Charity organisation set up by Grand Nagus Zek in 2371 on DS9 with his own personal fortune. Closed down without explanation a few days later. [Prophet Motive]

Ferengi Commerce Authority - Government body of Ferenginar, covers all aspects of trade and commerce. Abbreviated to FCA. [Family Business]

First Minister - Name given to the Bajoran Premier who is chosen by democratic election. Any Bajoran resident can stand for the position.

First Republic - Ancient Bajoran government structure that fell centuries ago. The achievements of the system and its eventual fall are well documented in the Bajoran library. [Explorers]

Guild of Restaurant and Casino Employees - Union formed by the staff of Quark's in 2372 to protest against unfair working conditions. Successfully achieved all their demands even with the heavy-handed involvement of the Ferengi Commerce Authority who tried to break the Union. [Bar Association]

Higa Mentar - Bajoran resistance cell that contained some of Bajor's leading scientists. Members included the geneticist Dekon Elig. [Babel]

High Council - Ruling body of the Klingon Empire, it replaced the Emperor centuries ago. It consists of representatives from all of the Great Houses.

Inquisitor - Cardassian educational instructor at the Central University. Cardassian educational techniques involve forms of memory implantation and other techniques that are deemed callous and unnecessary by other more civilised worlds. [Second Skin]

Judge Advocate General - The judicial branch of Starfleet that is responsible for upholding the laws of the Federation and bringing those that break them to justice. JAG officers are stationed on major outposts and colonies throughout the Federation.

Kai - Spiritual leader of the Bajoran people. Noted people to hold this title include Kai Taluno, Kai Moresa and Kai Opaka [Emissary] The current holder of the position is Kai Winn. [The Collaborator]

Kohn-Ma - Extremist Bajoran resistance cell. Continued violent actions against Cardassians well after the Withdrawal. Claimed responsibility for the assassination of the Bajoran First Minister in 2369. Operative Tahna Los was captured by Starfleet personnel during an attempt to collapse the mouth of the Wormhole. [Past Prologue]

Maquis - Militant organisation located within the Demilitarised Zone, it is made up of Federation citizens dissatisfied with the Cardassian-UFP treaty. Responsible for numerous terrorist acts against Cardassian ships and territory throughout the sector. Attempts by the Cardassians and also Starfleet to subdue this movement have so far met with little success. [Maquis I] Almost turned the tide in their battle against the Cardassians with their development of biogenic weapons in mid-2372. [For the Uniform] After the Cardassians joined with the Dominion, the joint forces of the Jem'Hadar and Cardassia were successful in totally wiping out all Maquis activity in a matter of days. A few surviving members were rescued from the Badlands by Captain Sisko in the mission where Maquis leader Michael Eddington died. [Blaze of Glory]

Ministers Court - Bajoran legal body consisting of five senior Ministers. [Past Prologue]

Navarch - Title given to Li Nalas by the Provisional Government. [The Homecoming]

Nestor - Cardassian legal term. Advisor to the accused in a Cardassian court. Has no right to address the court. [Tribunal]

Nyberrite Alliance - Loose political organisation in the distant Beta Quadrant. Known to welcome experienced officers from other races to serve as mercenaries in their fleet. [Way of the Warrior]

Obsidian Order - Cardassian government organisation responsible for internal security. Very effective. Known as being the ever present eyes and ears of the Government. [The Wire] Keeps all items that comes into its possession in vast warehouses. Its autonomy is a privilege granted by the Central Command and can be revoked at any time. [Second Skin] Forbidden to build or possess any forms of military hardware. However this did not prevent them from building a fleet of ships in the Orius system. [Defiant] These ships were used in a joint assault with the Tal Shiar on the Founders in an effort to destroy the Dominion. This mission was planned and executed by Enabran Tain, the most famous leader of the Obsidian Order. [The Die is Cast]

Orion Syndicate - Notorious criminal organisation that is gradually being reduced by the Federation and Orion governments but still remains widespread. Members are entirely loyal to the group and would take their own life rather than turn against them. New members are indoctrinated only if they have amassed a considerable fortune already. [The Ascent] In order to become a member you must be vouched for by an existing member who becomes responsible for your actions. You pay a "fare" to those above you from the proceeds of your illicit activities. [Honor Among Thieves]

Ornathia - Bajoran resistance cell. Led by Lenaris Holm, now a Colonel in the Militia. Noted for being responsible for the first of-world raid by the Bajoran resistance when they attacked the Pullok V settlement. [Shakaar]

President - Name given to the UFP Premier who is chosen from among the members of the Federation Council by democratic election.

Public Conservator - Cardassian legal official, most like a Terran lawyer. Since the verdict is already known, the role is said to be to make the accused happy with the verdict and show how justice always triumphs on Cardassia. [Tribunal]

Search and Excise Laws - Bajoran law expressly prohibits the unwarranted search and seizure of any starships within Bajoran space. [Way of the Warrior]

Section 31 - Secret branch of Starfleet Intelligence established by the original Starfleet Charter some 200 years ago. Totally autonomous, it reports to no-one and acts without apparent sanction to nullify perceived threats to the Federation. Its existence is neither confirmed or denied by Starfleet. [Inquisition]

Senate - Ruling body of the Romulan Star Empire.

Shakaar - Bajoran resistance cell. Responsible for the liberation of the Gallitep labor camp. Famous members include First Minister Shakaar Edon and Major Kira Nerys. [Past Prologue]

Starfleet - The armed forces wing of the United Federation of Planets. Responsible for defence, exploration and maintaining interstellar commerce. One of the most powerful military organisation in known space.

Starfleet Special Order 66715 - Drafted following the establishment of DS9 as a base of operations by Starfleet Command. Gives authority of organisations to neutralise security threats to Deep Space Nine by any means necessary. [Inquisition]

Station Regulation 1528 - Operational legislation for Deep Space Nine. Paragraph seven states that fund raising on the Promenade is illegal without the appropriate license. Vedek Solis was arrested for this at the end of 2373, but was released very quickly. [Tears of the Prophets]

Supreme Tribunal - Powerful legal body on Cardassia. [Ties of Blood and Water]

Symbiosis Commission - Trill government body that deals with all aspects of the symbionts, including the selection of hosts and the medical treatment of the symbionts and joined Trill. [Equilibrium]

Tal Shiar - The highly efficient Romulan Intelligence Service which is responsible for covert operations and also the internal security of the Empire.

Tetrarch - Occasionally used title for the leader of a Bajoran village or rural community, such as the Paqu on Bajor. [Storyteller]

The Great Link - Cornerstone of the Founder society, this is a merging of the changelings in their liquid state. Changelings are thought to be born here and the link also stores the collective knowledge of the race. [Search II]

True Way - Cardassian separatist group that blames the UFP for Cardassia's economic and sociological problems. Vehement opponents of the Treaty. Responsible for a number of acts of sabotage in 2372, including the destruction of the USS Orinoco which nearly led to the death of five DS9 command crew. [Our Man Bashir] Successfully assassinated two Bajoran officials in 2372. Also attempted to kill First Minister Shakaar while he visited DS9. [Crossfire]

United Federation of Planets - Major political organisation. Consists of over 100 planets allied for mutual trade and defence over a vast area of the Alpha and Beta quadrants. [Battlelines]

Vedek Assembly - Influential congress of 112 spiritual leaders on Bajor. Led by the Kai, it is of crucial importance in Bajoran politics. [Hands of the Prophets]
