Theme / Faction Information

The Bajoran Free Nation on ATS has its roots in the canon materials (TV Series, Books, and information from official sources on the Internet, as well as unofficial sources like Memory Alpha.

Following the theme for ATS in general, Bajoran history diverges from canon at the point of Way of the Warrior.

The BFN was once an NPC faction, but is now mostly a PC faction that is open to new members. As with all factions, a new player should talk to the existing members before joining, especially since day-to-day events may affect that 'openness'.

After joining, each new player should submit a background. The background explains how the character came to this point in his or her life. If the player wants a high-level position (Chief of Security or Engineering on DS9, for example) the background should show the character's qualifications for that position.

Although the vast majority of citizens are Bajorans, the nation has immigrants of other species. These species might face restrictions and prejudices from native Bajorans.

Bajoran society is based upon a caste system, which identifies the citizens by their D'jarra.

The Bajoran Free Nation takes a neutral stance where armed conflict is concerned. More information can be found in the Bajoran Theme.

Admin

Our faction does not presently have an admin assigned to it. Malia S'arth, the Interim First Minister, is an NPC used by the staff to address BFN affairs. For most concerns, simply contact one of the senior players within the BFN. If that doesn't work, contact anyone within the staff, preferably through Malia S'arth.

New Player Information

This information is presented here to answer the questions of new players (or newly-transitioning players) who might be interested in joining the Bajoran Free Nation (BFN). In accordance with the rules of Recruiting, these are not promises of position, rank, etc, but simply statements of "how it is" in the BFN, presented here in a way that enables us to avoid repeating the same information over and over to each potential recruit.

So, if you're interested in becoming a member of the BFN, you'll most likely take one of the following paths:

  • Become a member of the Bajoran Defense Force. New BDF officers are expected to hold a position on DS9, in either the Science, Medical, Operations, or Security departments (your preference), and an auxiliary position on a ship of our fleet. Most new officers are assigned the rank of Peldut (Cadet) or Kivas Esid (Second Lieutenant), but circumstances may allow a new character to begin as one of the Department Chiefs, as a Kivas Esid or Esid (Lieutenant). Your auxiliary position is up to you and the commanding officer of the ship to which you're assigned.
  • Become a member of the Vedek Assembly. We are always in need of Vedeks, Ranjens, and Prylars. This group, however, is much less defined, as there is only one 'senior' member, the Kai, which has historically been an alt of an admin. In other words, what you'll be doing as a Vedek, Ranjen, or Prylar, is much more up to you.
  • Become a member of the Bajoran government. There are two roles that new characters in this group usually fit into. Either you become a diplomat, charged with maintaining relations with one or more foreign nations, or you become one of the other various Ministers (Science, Economics, etc). Diplomats may find themselves eventually becoming the Minister of State, while the other Ministers often simply carve out their own niche in the BFN.
  • Become a citizen of Bajor. These characters are on their own, much more so than the other groups. Citizens of Bajor are members of the Bajoran Free Merchants guild and engage in trade across the galaxy. They run Quark's or other businesses on DS9. They are gardeners and schoolteachers. Or they simply hang out at Quark's and look for something interesting to come along.

These paths are certainly not set in stone. In fact, they're more like starting points than destinations, and they're only what is most likely to happen, not what must happen. It is also possible to be active in several of these roles, such as a Vedek who also serves as DS9's counselor, or a diplomat who also engages in interstellar trade. Yes, these roles might conflict with one another, but that's the point of a role-playing game, right?

As always, if you have questions about what your role in the BFN might be, or suggestions on what you would like it to be, please talk to one of the current BFN players.
