Out of Character (OOC) Information

History

Azin was created in November 2007 and is my first character on ATS. While I have played several Bajoran characters on other games, Azin is my first real journey into the Bajoran spiritual realm which has always fascinated me. I am not a religious person in real life and I like that Trek, in general, has moved beyond religion as an aspect of everyday life-- I suppose this lends to the quaintness of the Bajoran people and to their uniqueness in this universe.

I have been role-playing in various Trek on-line environments off and on since 1995. I prefer a strong RP'd storyline and character development over code-driven systems like economy and combat.

Background

(This is a work in progress and is subject to change.)

Born in 2369 to a single mother, Azin Narya, in the Southern Islands of Bajor, Veruca was a quiet, introverted child. Her mother never married, although not for lack of trying-- living a sinful life of constant promiscuity. Veruca never knew her father although it was always assumed he, like most of the others, was nothing more than a one night stand. She did not have any siblings.

It was because of this life, or perhaps in spite of it, that Veruca turned to religion even more than is considered normal. She became involved in her neighborhood temple, assisting the Acolytes and Prylar with tasks of cleaning and gardening. They, in turn, rescued her from her situation by helping her become an Acolyte following her ih'tanu ceremony. As an Acolyte, she was able to attend religion school in the capitol city and study the nuances of Bajoran religion. In 2387, she was given the title of Prylar and served a small ministry in a rural area of the Rakantha Province. During this time, she would often lend assistance to the farmers of the area by leading her small group of Acolytes out during the planting and harvesting seasons.

Veruca's successful outreach to the local farmers led in part to her being granted the title of Ranjen and being made an assistant to Assemby member Vedek Kana Arin in 2394. Kana was a typical Vedek, absorbed in the work of the assembly and policy-making. It was not the same type of hands on work that she found rewarding but Azin excelled at her duties.

In 2399, Vedek Kana raised support in the Vedek Assembly for a high-ranking religious member to accompany the crew of the BSV Freedom on a seven-year mission of exploration and scientific research throughout the Gamma Quadrant. The primary reason for such a push was to ensure the Assembly's first hand knowledge of what was encountered and what was learned. It was also argued that a Vedek, serving as an advisor to the command crew, could also double as envoy in a diplomatic role should it be necessary. It did not take much work for Kana to push through his choice assistant and ascending her into the ranks of the Vedeks (although not a member of the Assembly itself), and onto the roster of the BSV Freedom.

(Background on the Freedom here.) Azin took over for the ship's cousellor, Amary Kian, following her death during the Vengotti Incident in the Gamma Quadrant.

Azin was betrothed to the Freedom's commanding officer, Tolfar, for over a year. The betrothal was annulled just two weeks before their return to Bajor.

Upon the Freedom's Return in 2404, Azin dutifully reported the Freedom's findings to the Vedek Assembly. She find how much Bajor, the Assembly, the government, and the people have changed so dramatically in the long seven years since she was away. While she away, her mother passed away. Although the two were not close, Azin was disturbed that her only real familial root was torn away.

During a training lesson, Kai Jabara Res blinded the Vedek so that she could experience life 'in the darkness'. The lesson was meant to teach her about living without the guidance of the Prophets and was intended to last only a few weeks. Inexplicably, the blindness was not reversed as it should have been and she continues to live without sight.

Azin Veruca currently acts as the station counsellor for Deep Space Nine and officially holds the rank of Peldut (Cadet) while finishing academy classes in the field.
