A note on Canon. In "To the Death", we learned that the Dominion is at least 2000 years old, so please see the following timeline as a censored one, that means a timeline where passages about Changeling activities were cut off, although they have been present. Also, we just state that the Dominion openly called itself Dominion near the end of the 23rd century. The Ethuul, btw, are Changelings, but ICly, almost nobody knows that. :)
There are proofs of a very, very old empire ruling the entire quadrant. It possessed a very advanced technology, using transporters, replicators and mind-probing devices. It is generally accepted knowledge that this empire was ruled by Changelings, and all the tales and stories about Changelings can be traced back to this time.
The old Changeling Empire got destroyed long before the so-called 'Trade Wars' through unknown reasons, leaving no Changelings behind.
When the Changeling Empire fell, many smaller planets took advantage of this and grew into larger economic spheres. Since most of the advanced technology was lost when the old empire fell into disarray, empires had a hard time reaching out across the Gamma Quadrant in order to control it, thus letting many empires of mediocre size pop up. Spheres of economic and political influence increased through the years, causing some empires to favor others. Thus began the 'Trade Wars'. Empires in order to have their way or to take over other empires began putting economic sanctions like embargoes, high tariffs, high tolls to cross through their shipping lanes etc. Many of the smaller empires fell into poverty and died out, usurped by the larger ones. But the larger empires, that were also falling into poverty, launched military campaigns against the other empires. These battles that were fought were not very large and can be considered small skirmishes even in their days standards. There is no decisive winner of the Trade Wars, because the overall wealth throughout the Gamma Quadrant decreased and many planets fell into poverty and many more empires fell apart.
As the empires fell apart and planets fell into poverty, governments did not have the wealth nor the resources to build starships and ship with the other planets in the Gamma Quadrant. Thus the Trade Wars ended by each empire and planet slowly falling into a deep recession, and each government crumbling apart, leaving the Gamma Quadrant open and easy to take.
The Moihl Republic tried to bind as many planets as possible with either economic pressures or military force. Originating from the Quuj Sector, the Moihl Republic soon controlled most of the Gamma Quadrant. Rumors are saying that perhaps the legendary Ethuul were the leaders of the republic, but there no proofs of that yet. The capital of the Moihl Republic was Moxa.
In the period after the fall of the Moihl Republic many planets were impoverished because of the Moihl iron fisted economic policies. When Moxa fell, the supplies and money that the Moihl had been sending to planets to keep them alive stopped. Most planets dependent upon the Moihl support fell into depression, including the Bardean home planet.
The contact between the Klith and the Ethuul changed the Klith evolution dramatically. The Ethuul quickly conquered the primitive Klith race and annexed the Klith planet into their empire. Most of the Klith were abducted into slavery, but also many were trained in the newly built Ethuul schools on Klith.
When the Ethuul left the planet Klith, they left behind all their schools, most of their light cruisers, their starbase, their shipyard, and most of everything that they had brought to the Klith. The Klith were then left with all the advanced Ethuul technology, but with no one trained to use it. A few of the Klith learned how to use some of the more complicated things and many learned how to use the simpler items left by the Ethuul. But for the most part the majority of the population was suddenly freed from the numerous mines or from household slavery. This meant that most of the population was still ignorant and untrained. The Klith society quickly degenerated into anarchy, the few of the trained Klith that knew the workings of the Ethuul machinery were either killed of in one of the riots or escaped into a remote mountain retreat, taking as much of the Ethuul technology with them.
The Hij'Kilar intended to wipe out the whole Vorta race, to make Kareel Prime a new planet to exploit resources. But the Hij'Kilar encountered fierce resistance. The Vorta were able to destroy many Hij'Kilar ships, but the Hij'Kilar had a weakness for biological weapons and used an aggressive virus to kill the Vorta on Kareel Prime this way. However, the Hij'Kilar were not aware of the supreme spying capabilities of the Vorta, who already infiltrated the Hij'Kilar fleet and stole the formula for the antidote. After the failing of the last attack, the Hij'Kilar eventually moved back to the Sakaar Sector. This impressive victory rose the self-confidence of the Vorta empire significantly. They continued to build a large fleet, and they expanded their empire quickly by conquering other the other planets around them. Having more races in their empire, the Vorta started to rename their empire to Tel Cynar Empire.
Expeditions made by the Thentry explored the sixth planet in their system, and there they discovered very old machines, all working, and many data. The clans on Kryseis were able to translate them, and it was virtually a library of the, what is thought today, Ethuul, giving the Thentry suddenly the knowledge of warp drive, subspace communications and interstellar navigation.
In this year, the last of the mightier planets, Klaw'ghe surrendered to the Tel Cynar Empire.
After the Thentry moved over the whole Kjiloss Sector, the families started to accept that fighting each other was completely ridiculous, there was enough room for all of them, and even greater possibilities when they cooperated. Brought many races together, all of them met in this year on the Castle of Vaete, signing up a treaty of working together in the future, and naming themselves the Pol Kollum.
The council quickly organized a large and effective army and proceeded to attack the neighboring star systems. Under this council (the one still in use today) the Klith Empire grew economically and financially, as each member of the council had to be of the chosen class. It took the Klith only fifty years to gain what they had.
The Vr'khaan, living in the Sakaar Sector, were for the most part very warlike and slow progressing for quite some time, but after a planetary revolution about 40 years before the rise of the Four Pillars Empire, the Vr'khaan put much of their research into space travel. The discovery of space travel spread many Vr'khaan peacefully throughout their region within just a couple of years, although they didn't have warp drives. The Vr'khaan reveled in new found technologies and lifestyles for a decade until the Hij'Kilar came.
The Hij'Kilar came and quickly took over a large part of the Sakaar Sector and then moved in on the Vr'khaan homeworld l'Jilok. Some Vr'khaan fled to D'ko Fafnir, and started to build Yn'Kaisor out of hulls of old spaceships.
The constant fighting about the remaining quarter prevented a further expansion of the Klith. They began to call themselves Khonsary Sect after taking the Puuge and the Ikda which marked the halfway point for the Klith.
The Hij'Kilar used Sumn'Kapta as a test planet for a newly developed biological weapon. The Tr'Pakh were completely wiped out, leaving only the MahRahn behind. But the Hij'Kilar underestimated their own weapon and did not have enough safety precautions, with the consequence that about a quarter of their own empire was destroyed as well until it could be stopped. After this incident, the Hij'Kilar stopped using biological weapons at all, and destroyed everything they knew about them. This gave the MahRahn time to prepare for defense. But they didn't need to, because on the opposite side of this sector, the Hij'Kilar landed on l'Jilok, the Vr'khaan homeworld, and the Vr'khaan started on their path to conquest.
In a "peasant raid" upon the landing Hij'Kilar war ships the Vr'khaan decisively victored over the Hij'Kilar army. News of this raid spread throughout the sector and the Vr'khaan earned the reputation of 'liberators'. This new found image helped the Vr'khaan 'liberate' the rest of their sector and secure themselves from further Hij'Kilar attacks. Yet Prime Minister Jo'Haan, ruler at the time of the conquest, decided that a strong military was needed to insure that no further attacks were mounted from the outside. So Jo'Haan set up a secret military organization called the Hellaar with orders to 'maintain the peace at all costs'. At first the Hellaar were a docile organization primarily made of analyst and granted limited powers, but that soon changed. After two short years of peace rumors of the Hij'Kilar coming back in enormous numbers came up, and Prime Minister Qie'Luuk decided to prepare for the oncoming assault and she gave the Hellaar orders to 'protect the Vr'khaan at all costs' with powers to back it up.
The Hellaar's leader Kyi'Polik made the decision that the only way to ensure peace was to make sure the enemy never had a chance to attack.
The Hellaar, after building up massive armada equipped with the latest weaponry, attacked the homeworld of the Hij'Kilar and successfully annihilated the Hij'Kilar. This was the start of the Vr'khaan empire.
The Four Pillars consisted of four empires, the Vr'khaan, the Tel Cynar, the Pol Kollum and the Khonsary Sect.
In the following three centuries, no major wars were fought, and the Four Pillars Empire slowly drifted into a stagnating phase.
When literally only one planet was not ruled by the Tel Cynar, they wanted to conquer that one too. They sent in 4 divisions to Jh'Niv, but they underestimated the people there. Although technologically not much over the stone age, the inhabitants of Jh'Niv, calling themselves Jem'Hadar, managed to wipe out the Tel Cynar forces within seconds.
Near the end of the Four Pillars Era, a small group of Tel Cynar citizens on the planet Gorak'e opened their eyes and realized what had happened to their empire. This group knew that there were no more leaders left in any of the empires strong enough to restore the Gamma Quadrant to its former glory and decided to take it upon themselves to rid the Gamma Quadrant of these old dead weight institutions. For eight years the group, now calling themselves the Palle Cynar or The Free Tel Cynar League, gathered forces and equipment to begin fighting against the Tel Cynar empire.
The Tel Cynar was wrought with strife and rebellion as many different planets tried to break away from Tel Cynar rule. It is in this environment that the Palle Cynar, one group amongst many, began to fight for their ideals. At first the Palle Cynar focused on small terrorist types of raids in order to knock out key military installations.
After a year of terrorism the Tel Cynar Imperial Army landed on Gorak'e in order to repress the growing rebellion, or the Palle Cynar. Their landing was met with resistance killing over 200 Imperial Soldiers and only 20 Palle Cynar rebels.
The incident rallied support for the Palle Cynar in neighboring systems and the rebellion grew. The Palle Cynar increased attacks on Tel Cynar installations and in 2304 the Milchama systems, at the fringes of the empire, declared independence from the Tel Cynar.
The Tel Cynar did not have the military available to take back the systems until 2305, when the 4th Imperial Fleet was sent into to repress the rebellion in those systems at all costs. When the 4th Imperial Fleet arrived in the Milchama subsector, they were met by the 1st Dominion Fleet. In the course of one year the Palle Cynar had transformed itself from a small rebellion near the fringes of the Gamma Quadrant into a powerful military force that was destined to conquer the entire Quadrant. The 4th Imperial Fleet entered the Milchama Systems on Red Alert, there they met the first sightings of the Dominion Fleet manned by Jem'Hadar and were destroyed on sight. After the battle, a subspace message was sent out all over the Gamma Quadrant stating: "The times of old are gone and a new era has risen upon the Gamma Quadrant. This new era is The Dominion and all will fall before us."
The message was ignored at first, but three months later when the Tel Cynar publicly announced their surrender to the Dominion, the remaining three empires met on the planet Klith to discuss the threat of the Dominion. A last attempt of the Tel Cynar to destroy the planet Gorak'e failed. However, it was a partially success, since most of the lifeforms on Gorak'e were destroyed, but that couldn't stop the Dominion. Later, Gorak'e was renamed to Domini, and a terraforming process began, not completed even today.
Nothing was resolved and soon the Dominion was starting to invade the Khonsary Sector. The Klith, although great warriors, were no match for the superior technology and aggressiveness of the Dominion's Jem'Hadar warriors. In the year 2306 the Khonsary Sect publicly declared their unconditional surrender to the Dominion. The Khonsary Sect's surrender sent shock waves throughout the Gamma Quadrant. The Vr'khaan and the Pol Kollum met once again to discuss plans to protect themselves, but as before egos and pride got in the way of any treaties being signed.
Yet, the Dominion continued its assault on the old empires of the Gamma Quadrant invading next the Kjiloss Sector to overtake the Pol Kollum. The Pol Kollum, knowing that they could not win, immediately surrendered to the Dominion so that their trading empire would not be hurt. The forces of the Dominion usurped all the holdings of the Pol Kollum and began to invade the Sakaar Sector.
The Vr'Khaan had rusted their once mighty war machine and had focused on their economy. The Dominion overran quickly much of the Vr'Khaan's territory, but the Vr'Khaan found a non-military way to prolong the Dominion take over. They used their influence through diplomats and businessmen to insure that production of the Dominion army would be stalled for a while. The Vr'Khaan had hoped that with their new founded time they would be able to rebuild their army and take back what they had lost to the Dominion. Unfortunately, the Dominion already conquered and integrated the Pol Kollum and the Tel Cynar and was able to counter act this threat to them. The Vr'Khaan lasted another 8 years before they succumbed to the military and economic might of the Dominion after the last bastion, D'ko Fafnir fell, unable to defend against the Jem'Hadar troops.
